Our Location

Into the history: The Stadium of Domitian

The property has the privilege of being located on the ancient ruins of the Stadium of Domitian. First and only example of a masonry stadium built by the ancient Romans in Campo Marzio between 85-86 AD.

The stadium was mainly intended for athletic competitions and racing, it was built to import in Rome the Greek athletic games appreciated by Domitian, but little loved by the Romans. A visionary project which tried to "romanise" the Greek Olympics. The building, measuring 275 meters in length by 106 meters wide, could hold about 30,000 spectators (the Colosseum 50 / 60,000).

Only during the seventeenth century Piazza Navona obtained a unitary and monumental configuration thanks to the work of some of the best-known artists of the time.

Today it is a splendid archaeological site on which our guests have special point of view.
